Five Displaced After Large Garage Fire in Caroline Co.

DENTON, Md. – Five individuals in Denton have been displaced after a large garage fire damaged their home on Sunday morning.
Just before 8:00 a.m. on Sept. 13, crews with the Denton Volunteer Fire Company and other local departments responded to a two-story house in the 100 block of Briarwood Circle after an occupant discovered a fire inside the attached garage. Smoke alarms and sprinklers were present in the home, but not in the garage where the fire originated.
The occupant closed the interior single-main garage door upon discovering the fire, which the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal says is credited with containing the majority of the fire damage to the attached garage.
Firefighters battled the blaze for an hour before successfully extinguishing the flames. The total damage to the structure and its contents is estimated to be valued at $300,000. Fire marshals determined the cause of the fire to be the result of improperly discarded smoking materials.
A pet cat remains unaccounted for at this time. The displaced family is being assisted by friends, other family members, and the American Red Cross.
