Salisbury residents clean up storm debris
SALISBURY, Md. – Wednesday night’s storm system brought plenty of wind and rain so people spent Thursday clearing debris from their yards and streets.
“All of a sudden we heard something go wooooosh and I looked out stuff is flying like in the Wizard of Oz,” says Jackson Turner, a Salisbury resident describing Wednesday night’s storm.
Some Salisbury residents woke up to quite the mess on Thursday as they deal with the aftermath of Wednesday night’s storm.
“I heard a big bang and the storm kept coming,” says Olivia Henderson, a Salisbury resident.
The wind and rain threw branches into streets, across yards and even uprooted some trees.
“Pretty much down this way you have trees laying across the road and stuff they’re cutting out up now and getting it ready,” says Turner.
Turner says he wasn’t expecting the damage caused to his house. “All of a sudden I heard something go boom and I came through the front of the house and right where the kitchen is a big tree went right through the kitchen window and another tree went right through the roof stabbed right through the roof of the house.”
He tells 47 ABC he’s lived in Salisbury for almost 20 years and can’t remember a storm like this one.
“We had another storm it just knocked a few limbs down, nothing major like this. This was a big one,” says Turner.
And other residents like Olivia Henderson agree. “Never. I haven’t seen a storm like this never in my life and I’m 77 years old.”
To make matters worse, this week’s heatwave won’t make cleanup easy.
“I just have to get a few more things hauled away. It won’t get done today though because throughout the week it’s going to be hot. It’s going to be 100 degrees and stuff like that so it’s not getting done right now. But we’re working at it,” says Turner.
But people tell 47 ABC they’re moving forward. “We’re getting back we’re coming back we’re bouncing back that’s all I can say,” Turner tells 47 ABC.
Because things could’ve been worse. “I don’t know what to think I just thank God that it wasn’t my house,” says Henderson.
The odd thing about this storm is that it seems like certain parts of the city weren’t touched, while others like neighborhoods off of Route 50 were impacted. Luckily, 47 ABC hasn’t gotten any reports of people who were hurt because of the storm.
The Salisbury Zoo was also closed Thursday because of trees and power lines that were knocked down during the storm. And the city is reminding residents that it is only responsible for cleaning up trees that have fallen on sidewalks or in the road.
