Wicomico County Council votes to go to bond for Fruitland Primary School project
FRUITLAND, Md. – Fruitland Primary School is due for an overhaul. The institution was built in 1955, and Tuesday night, a major step was taken toward the dream of a new building.
Wicomico County Council voted to approve a new round of funding for construction of the new school.
The $10,250,000 bond approved Tuesday is on top of $10,500,000 included in the county’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget.
“This [brings us to] approximately half of what’s needed,” explained Wicomico County Council President John Cannon. “We anticipate that in Fiscal Year 26, there will be another $20,500,000 commitment. That should conclude what our obligations are to the Fruitland Primary School project.”
The new school will be built behind the current one, which is slated to become a parking lot. Cannon tells WMDT that roadway access will be improved, along with the addition of a new bike lane.
Cannon says Council will likely consider final steps toward project completion in February or March of 2025.
