DE Federal Delegation Celebrates Federal Funding for Rural Healthcare, Affordable Housing in Laurel

LAUREL, Del. – On Tuesday, Senators Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester and U.S. Representative Sarah McBride (all D-Del.) visited Laurel to celebrate nearly $10 million in federal funding that will support several projects aimed at expanding rural healthcare and affordable housing in Sussex County.
The event concluded the delegation’s “Delivering for Delaware: Federal Investment at Work” tour across Sussex County. The Congressmembers joined several organizations, local officials, and community leaders to celebrate more than $5 million in healthcare investments to local health providers, La Red and Beebe Healthcare. The money will be put toward improving health facilities in Seaford, Georgetown, and Millsboro. Additionally, the funding will support La Red’s Rural Re-entry Program, designed to support individuals transitioning back into their communities after incarceration.
“Every Delawarean should have access to quality affordable health care, regardless of their zip code or background,” said Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester. “We will continue to work to close health care gaps and lower rising health care costs, so no Delawarean has to choose between putting food on their table and getting the care they deserve.”

Additionally, the delegation highlighted an additional $5 million in federal funding to expand affordable housing opportunities at the Meadow View project in Laurel, where 245 new homes will eventually stand. Attendees saw the site where the initial 50 homes will be constructed.
“Ensuring families have access to affordable housing is a key focus of our congressional delegation,” said Rep. McBride. “Housing developments like this are integral to the success of rural communities and help ensure our neighbors are able to put down roots in the communities where they live and work.”
Together, the four investments total $10.495 million.
