Food Bank of DE brings together valuable resources at Spring Senior Health Fair

MILFORD, Del. – The Food Bank of Delaware is looking to support seniors by gathering valuable resources for their wellbeing under one roof.

Valuable Resources Make for Smiling Seniors

Seniors in attendance say there was plenty to smile about.

“It’s something that the area needs,” remarked attendee Sandy Saunders.

More than 30 health and community organizations were on hand at the Food Bank’s new Milford headquarters. Each vendor offered valuable resources to Kent and Sussex County seniors.

“They have so much information, providing us with some really good food that we can make at home, which we like,” said attendee Judy Morris. “Yeah, it’s really nice, what they’ve done here.”

The seniors also got a chance to fill their car trunks with free, healthy food.

“There’s stands for us to get fruits and vegetables, and all kinds of health questions are answered here,” said attendee Kathy McNamara. “So, I’m loving it, so far!”

Under One Roof

Having all that help under one roof is exactly what Food Bank officials say they had in mind when designing the new facility.

“When people are dealing with food insecurity, they’re most likely encountering other issues, as well. They might have difficulties affording their rent or their mortgage, they might be having difficulties with affording prescription drug medications,” said vice president of Food Bank communications, Kim Turner. “We can get the information to our community that they need in all facets of their life.”

Aside from the lessons learned, and goodies gathered, Food Bank officials say it’s the connections made that really make a difference.

“I think our seniors are looking for those different types of resources,” Turner said. “They want an opportunity to get out. We know that with the COVID-19 pandemic, we were stuck inside for over two years, especially our senior citizens.”

Looking Ahead

Turner said based on the smashing success of Tuesday’s event, the Food Bank will likely be looking for ways to expand it in the future.

Until then, seniors in need of assistance from the Food Bank are always welcome through their doors. For more information about the Food Bank’s senior nutrition program, click here.
