Man sentenced on charges stemming from serious DUI crash in Worcester Co.

1280 Michael Ebert

WORCESTER CO., Md. – A Maryland man has been sentenced to prison for causing life threatening injuries while driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

On September 14, 2022, Maryland State Police responded to Route 50 in Whaleyville for a reported crash, arriving at the scene to find two people suffering from significant head trauma and bodily injury lying on the pavement in front of a motorcycle. One of the individuals was identified as 53-year-old Michael Ebert, who was determined to be the owner and driver of the motorcycle. First responders noted the strong smell of alcohol coming from Ebert before he and his female passenger were flown to Johns Hopkins for treatment.

A drug and alcohol screening upon arrival at the hospital revealed that Ebert’s blood alcohol content was more than .12. It was further determined that Ebert’s motorcycle traveled off the roadway and into the center median, causing the footrest to hit the ground, leading to the motorcycle sliding on its side and ejecting both riders. Police say the female passenger suffered a broken left shoulder, broken rib, a punctured lung, partial paralysis, and loss of hearing in one ear, severe cranial. These injuries required in-patient treatment at the hospital and critical aftercare services for an extensive period of time.

Ebert was sentenced to a total of three years with all but one year suspended and five years of supervised probation on release.
