DHSS reminds Delaware resident’s of respiratory virus season

Delaware: The respiratory illness season is upon us, and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services is encouraging everyone who can get a vaccine to do so.

While this time of year is always challenging, Dr. Rosenbaum with DHSS tells 47ABC that the triple threat of respiratory illnesses from Covid-19, the flu, and RSV, can cause burdens on health care systems.

“So one of the concerns is the presence of respiratory illnesses such as flu, Covid-19, RSV, if they all occur that the same time and they frequently do, we have the risk of an increased patient burden…”

Going on to say that vaccinating yourself from these diseases can help keep you and others healthy: “These are preventable illnesses. These are illnesses the vaccines can at least limit if you do happen to catch the disease. Lessen the severity of the disease, or even prevent the disease altogether.”

DSHH recommends that children 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine, and strongly recommends that children under the age of 5, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying medical conditions get vaccinated for the flu as soon as possible.

The Covid-19 and Flu vaccine can be administered together safely.
