Bayhealth opens new total care facility in Milton, fulfills need for more services in Sussex County
MILTON, Del. – “The population numbers really outstrip the supply of physicians and the supply of services down here. It was important to get something close by for the county so people can have access to everything we’re going to provide here at total care,” Dr. Siegelman said.
Bayhealth President Terry Murphy says the 50,000 square foot facility now sits in one of county’s hotspots. He tells 47ABC the space will house both primary and specialty care services, expanded lab services, and more. “It brings free a standing emergency room, physicians’ offices, physician clinic appointments, and full diagnostics to this site,” Murphy said.
The new facility will also operate under a hybrid model, combining both the ER and Urgent Care departments.
It’s something Chief Medical Officer Gary Siegelman calls innovative thinking. “The urgent care is typically a different cost, so people are really getting the best sort of triage and placement for where they need their medical care,” Dr. Sielgelman said.
As they prepare to serve patients near and far, the nationwide labor shortage still lingers. Despite that, the health care system already has plans in motion. “BayHealth is now a teaching hospital. As Delaware’s 2nd largest health system, we now have 73 physicians that we’re training this year to hopefully stay in this growing community to serve this area,” Murphy said.
Officials tell me the new facility is another step in BayHealth’s goal in growing their presence in the first state to meet the demand for life-saving care. “I get phone calls as a medical director and people asking where can I find a primary care office? Where can I find a specialist? This help solve some of those issues for people in Sussex County,” Dr. Siegelman said.
Bayhealth tells 47ABC they’re also growing their partnerships with local colleges and universities to attract talent.
The new facility will open its doors to the public Tuesday, July 11th at 7:00AM.
