Expert: Cold weather does not cause illnesses

A misconception among some is that cold weather causes colds; however, medical experts say it's a myth that low temperatures are the direct blame for illnesses.

Dr. Victor Gong of the 75th Street Medical Center says it's true, rhinoviruses can replicate in the cold and that the body is naturally less immune to illnesses during colder temperatures.

However, Dr. Gong explains that just means humans are pre-disposed to getting sick. He says a change in temperatures could mean allergy-like symptoms.

"Now also in the winter months, you're in the house more, pets are in the house more, you have more accumulation of allergens, so all of that combined could give you more of a seasonal allergy type of symptom as well which can be confusing also," he explains.

If you are sensitive to allergies, health experts say there are plenty of over-the-counter medications you can take. Washing your hands is also important to staying sick-free overall.
