Coastal Flooding in Dewey Beach, Crisfield mixed with drop in temperatures mean slick roads for coastal communities

DEWEY BEACH, Del.- Gusts of wind upwards of 30 miles per hour, flooding, and even snow all slammed into Dewey Beach Friday.

Town Manager Bill Zolper tells 47ABC, up to 5 streets flooded on the bayside of the town, with concerns that waters could flood the main road through the beach town.

“You’ve got a lot of water pushed up against the streets the bayside streets in Dewey now so what’s happening that’s water is hitting the storm drains and the water has nowhere to go at this time,” Zolper said.

Zolper tells us due to the efforts of the US Army Corps of Engineers, the ocean side is protected by Dunes, but as for the bay the current storm drains are not working, though the town is hoping to fix the issue soon.

“We are working with UDel and other groups to determine the best way to improve this drain system,” Zolper said.

Zolper says residents in the town should buckle up for high winds, slick roads, and power outages.

“There is going to be some power outages there is going to be high winds I know in 1989 that storm we got as low as one degree we won’t be quite that low but it will also be cold tonight,” he said.

Zolper tells 47ABC crews will not be out salting the roads until after conditions improve, so residents should be weary of slicks, and black ice.

Similar conditions saw the Crisfield marina submerged completely according to police, with slicks also expected to develop as the water reaches deep inland ahead of dropping temperatures in the low teens into Saturday morning.
