Henlopen Football Preview: Smyrna Eagles
SMYRNA, Del. – The last time we saw the Smyrna Eagles on the field was after that devastating loss to Middletown in the state championship game in December. It was a bitter defeat, one suffered after losing the lead late in the second half to their arch rivals.
But that loss has brought this team closer together.
“The energy has been really competitive, the energy has been really high every practice,” Smyrna senior Nate Chandler told 47 ABC Sports.
Yamir Knight is maybe the most explosive player in the state and he’s back for his senior year.
He says you can expect the same explosive offense from Smyrna which has a new quarterback, senior Brian Knight. Knight had high praise for the field general charged with taking over position from Cameron Edge.
“He’s been getting reps with us since freshman year, so that chemistry should be built already,” Knight said.
Don’t forget the defense – Chandler, a defensive end, says a lot of players are returning this year and claims that they have the best defense in the state. With stars like Brandon West on the defensive line and Cole Moyer leading the linebackers.
And we already know what the goals are for Smyrna heading into the season – getting back to the University of Delaware and winning a state title.
