UPDATE: Name released, DSP investigate fatal crash in Lewes
LEWES, Del.– Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate an accident that has left one dead in Lewes.
We’re told the incident occurred just after 6:30 PM, when a CIXK Moped traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway approached the entrance of the Peddler’s Village Shopping Center at the same time a Jeep Wrangler approached the shopping center from the eastbound direction. After the Wrangler stopped in the left turn lane, it began to turn left into the entrance of the shopping center, directly into the path of the Moped. The Moped and its operator were redirected to the westbound side of the roadway as a result of the impact.
The driver of the Moped, 28 year-old Christopher F. Keech from Georgetown, was reportedly not wearing a helmet. He was taken to Beebe Medical Center and later transferred to Christiana Hospital in serious condition, but died as a result of his injuries on Thursday.
A 16-year-old male from Millsboro was driving the Wrangler. Police say he was properly restrained and neither he nor his two passengers suffered injuries as a result of the crash.
