DelDOT collects over 500 illegal political signs

DELAWARE – We see them up and down Delmarva during the campaign trail, political signs with candidates names are all over the roadways.

But in Delaware, officials are cracking down on signs that aren’t in the right places. DelDOT tells 47 ABC that they’ve collected over 500 signs from across the state that were placed in illegal spots.

That’s over $14,000 in fines, but we’re told it’s not just a couple candidates running for election that are in the wrong – it’s dozens. The issue isn’t just about where these signs are located that’s the problem, it’s also about when they’re being put up.

DelDOT Spokesperson C.R. McLeod says, “DelDOT does have a clear zone which means no signs are permitted within 10 feet from the edge of the roadway and no signs at all in medians. So that’s really the basic rule that we ask anyone putting signs out must follow. Also candidates must adhere to the rule that signs can only go up 30 days before the election and they must be removed 30 days after the elections.”

Teams collect the signs throughout the state and each sign found in violation of the rules is a $15 fine. On private property it is up to that individual to place the sign where they see fit.
