Turnout for opioid discussion “disappointing”
SALISBURY, Md. – Following the Take Back The Community Forum at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center Wednesday night, the sheriff is calling the turnout, “disappointing.”
Just last year, the opioid forum at the same venue had over 300 in attendance, all gathered to discuss ways to combat the epidemic.
Wednesday, just two showed up for the discussion.
It was disappointing for county officials and the twenty vendors who came by to offer help for the community.
“I’m very surprised, I’m disappointed, but it’s a sad day for Wicomico County when we’ve become so desensitized to addiction, we simply don’t care enough to show up and discuss it,” said Wicomico Sheriff Mike Lewis.
Sheriff Lewis tells us following the turnout at the Civic Center that county officials will re-evaluate whether it is viable to hold more opioid forums in the future. He also says now is not the time to forget the discussion, as Wicomico County has seen an increase in total overdoses this year compared with 2017.
