Saturday morning crash kills 17-year-old from Georgetown
MILTON, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened Saturday morning on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9). Police say the crash happened just west of Hudson Road.
Around 7:55 a.m., police say a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic being driven by a 17-year-old male from Georgetown was traveling westbound. At the same time, a 2018 Kia Optima being driven by a 30-year-old Lewes man was traveling eastbound in the same area.
Police say for unknown reasons, the Chevrolet swerved into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the Kia. The two vehicles collided head one in the middle of the eastbound lane. After the impact, the Chevrolet came to a stop in the road, and the Kia went off the road.
The 17-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at Beebe Medical Center. Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin. The 30-year-old driver of the Kia was taken to Beebe Medical Center with serious injuries.
The roadway was closed for about three hours while the investigation was conducted and the scene was cleared. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Cpl. Ryan Albert at (302) 703-3266.
