Largest Viking ship stops in Lewes before it sails to Ocean City

In Sussex County, a new attraction has caught the attention of community members in Lewes. The Draken is the world’s largest Viking ship built in modern times.

Their journey began in Norway and the captain of the boat, Björn Ahlander, tells us they wanted to sail the historic voyage to North America.

They’re doing an East Coast Tour and they were on route to Ocean City.

But the winds were too strong, which caused them to get to their destination faster. They arrived a bit early and they decided to dock in Lewes.

The boat is a re-creation of what the Vikings would call a “Great Ship”, so it was built with the knowledge of ships that have been discovered and preserved.

The captain says it’s the real deal when it’s comes to living like the Viking’s did, there are 24 people who live in a tent on the boat.

They leave Lewes Wednesday morning and will head to Ocean City. They will be there for a week, August 22-29, offering tours and lectures.
