UPDATE: WMDT speaks with Rep. Andy Harris after winning ninth term
MARYLAND – The Associated Press has called Rep. Andy Harris (R) to win his re-election for Maryland’s First Congressional District.
AP called the race at 11:42 p.m. on Nov. 3, with Harris garnering almost 56 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Democrat candidate Dan Schwartz, winning a little over 44 percent.
“Whether or not we’re in the majority or minority, it looks like we’re going to be in the minority in Washington, you know, I’m going to keep delivering to the district,” Harris said to WMDT, noting that he still sits on the Appropriations Committee in the House. “We’re going to make sure that, the rural areas of my district, get the attention they deserve from Washington.”
Dan Schwartz conceded the race on Wednesday afternoon, thanking his voters while criticizing the passage of Question 3, and celebrating Democratic wins in Wicomico County.
“MD-1 could have been part of this tidal wave if resources were focused on building the biggest possible tent here, instead of taking the district by force in 2028,” Schwartz said, in part. “The people of MD-1 face real problems that need to be addressed now, not two years down the road… All 10 counties and the portion of Baltimore County that make up MD-1 rejected Question 3, because they want to be represented by someone here, not whomever Annapolis decides.”
The results for this race, with all 309 precincts reported, are as follows:
Running for his ninth term as Congressman, Harris previously served as a Maryland state senator and an anesthesiologist in the Naval Reserve during the Reagan administration. Learn more about his race against Schwartz here.
