Handsell House hosts Amplifying Our Voices Symposium
(VIENNA, Md) – Historians from across Maryland, Delaware and Virginia are here at the Hansell House in Vienna to take part in the first ever Amplifying their Voices symposium. One of the first major events happening at the Three Cultures Center at Handsell.
Nanticoke Preservation Alliance Vice President Midge Ingersoll gives us a quick overview of the three day event taking place at the Three Cultures Center.
Midge tells WMDT, “It’s a symposium on interpretation of black and indigenous history. So he’s using the hands of both enhancing the site and our incident database as the basis for his teaching.”
The symposium is running through the weekend with researchers holding discussions through Friday.
With Saturday being open for everyone.
“Then on Saturday, we’re open to the public, and then I’ll actually be doing the interpretation that they’re talking about. So we have 7 or 8 interpreters that will be here on Saturday. It’s a great day of living history,” says Midge.
And historical groups from across Delmarva are making sure they hear the stories of cultures converging at Handsell.
Midge tells us, “Some are saying for today, some are staying for three days. Some were djust able to send some staff or volunteers for one day. Some are coming today. Some are coming tomorrow.”
