Shore to Shore: Cakes That Are Edible Works Of Art
SALISBURY, Md. — A local bakery is turning flour, frosting and imagination into edible works of art while helping customers celebrate life’s biggest milestones.
In the latest edition of Shore to Shore, we visit a downtown Salisbury shop serving up custom cakes and other sweet treats.
For Cake Art owner Susan Patt, the passion for baking started early.
“My interest in baking and pastry started when I was about 8 years old, baking with my mom,” Patt said. “But I wanted to go beyond baking. My mom wasn’t into decorating, and I developed a desire to learn how to decorate cakes.”
Before opening her own business, Patt attended culinary school and worked in professional kitchens of all sizes.
“With Hyatt, we would have weddings for 400 people, so you’re doing a lot of mass production,” Patt said. “It’s not as detail-oriented, and I really wanted to create unique cakes and cater to what my customers want.”
Creating custom cakes involves more than baking. Once the layers are stacked and frosted, Patt transforms them into personalized designs, often inspired by customers’ creative ideas. One of the bakery’s most popular creations is a crab basket cake.
“We make all the crabs by hand out of fondant — not real crabs,” Patt said with a laugh. “Then we make a little Old Bay can, along with the mallet and corn on the cob and stuff. “
The bakery’s offerings extend beyond custom cakes. Customers can also stop in for cupcakes, cookies and macarons. Whether it’s a birthday celebration or a wedding, Patt said advance notice helps ensure every order receives the attention it deserves.
“Everything here is custom-made and designed,” Patt said. “We recommend at least one week’s notice. Sometimes we can do orders in a shorter time frame, but during wedding season, two weeks is even better.”
From birthdays to weddings, Cake Art creates desserts for some of life’s most memorable moments. Patt’s journey shows how creativity, dedication and a little frosting can help make those occasions even sweeter.
