19-year-old, several juveniles arrested for string of carjacking, theft in Maryland

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Ocean City Police are investigating an armed carjacking that happened Friday night.

Police say a citizen reported a possible vehicle break-in on Wicomico Street. As officers were on their way, they were dispatched to Dorchester Street for an armed carjacking with a handgun. There, they found a 73-year-old male victim from Brandywine, Md. suffering a head injury. The victim was taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim told investigators he was standing near his vehicle when three males approached him. Police say one of the males pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his personal belongings. The victim was then struck on the back of the head with the handgun, according to police. The suspects also reportedly stole the  victim’s vehicle and several personal items.

A short time later, the stolen vehicle was found at a convenience store in the area of North Division Street. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver fled northbound on Philadelphia Avenue with two other vehicles. All three vehicles cross the Route 50 bridge, leaving town. The driver, later identified as 19-year-old Jaquawn Daney of Baltimore ran away. Daney was arrested a short time later, and it was discovered that he was driving an unreported stolen vehicle from Somerset Street in Ocean City.

Police did not chase the other two vehicles. The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office later stopped the carjacked vehicle , and a juvenile driver was arrested. The third vehicle crashed and caught fire in Dorchester County. Cambridge Police say three juveniles ran from the vehicle after the crash, and were later arrested.

Meanwhile, Ocean City Police found several other vehicles parked in the same area had been broken into. Investigators say a handgun had been stolen from one of the broken-into vehicles. Cambridge Police also found the stolen handgun and several other stolen items on one of the juveniles they arrested.

Numerous other personal items were recovered from the suspects and stolen vehicles. Officers traced the property back to the vehicle break-ins in Ocean City, and others in Baltimore. Five people have been arrested.

Daney is charged with armed robbery, robbery, carjacking, stolen property valued between $25,000 and $100,000, reckless endangerment, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and two counts of unlawful taking of motor vehicle. He appeared before a Maryland District Court Commissioner, and is being held without bail at Worcester County Jail.

Juvenile #1 is identified as a 15-year-old from Baltimore. They are currently in custody in Wicomico County. Charges are pending for crimes committed in ocean City.

Juvenile #2 is identified as a 17-year-old from Baltimore. They were charged with armed robbery, robbery, carjacking, stolen property valued between $25,000 and $100,000, reckless endangerment, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, unlawful taking of motor vehicle. Juvenile #2 is also charged with possession of a firearm/ammo as a minor, and possession of a stolen firearm. They appeared before a Maryland District Court Commissioner, and are being held without bail at Worcester County Jail.

Juvenile #3 is identified as a 14-year-old from Baltimore. They were released to a parent by Cambridge Police Department. Juvenile #4 is identified as a 12-year-old from Baltimore. They were also released to a parent by Cambridge Police Department.
