UPDATE: Suspect in custody following morning barricade situation in Delmar

DELMAR, Del. – A 27-year-old Church Hill, Maryland man is in custody after he barricaded himself inside a home with a toddler following a domestic dispute.

Early Monday morning, police were dispatched to a domestic violence dispute on East Grove Street in Delmar. Police say the suspect and a female acquaintance had gotten into an argument.

When officers arrived, they met with a female victim outside the home. She was removed from the scene. It was learned that the 27-year-old male suspect got into the fight with the female victim while a two-year-old child was present in the residence. Shots were fired while police were on scene. However, the details surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

“Police maintained contact with the suspect. He was given numerous opportunities to surrender to the police. He did not comply, and eventually, the police made entry into the residence,” said Delaware State Police Senior Corporal Leonard Demalto.

Eventually police entered the home and took the suspect into custody. The toddler was not injured, but was taken to a nearby hospital for a precautionary check-up following the incident. The female victim was not injured. The suspect was treated for minor injuries.

Schools in the area were released early. Delaware State Police say there is no threat to the public. Trick-or-treating will go on as planned. Police also clarified that the situation was considered a “barricaded subject”, not a hostage situation or standoff.

Charges are pending for the suspect.
