East New Market crash kills one, injures another

EAST NEW MARKET, Md. – Maryland State Police are investigating a crash that killed one person Saturday night.

Police say just before 6:30 p.m., 62-year-old Loc Van Trang and 62-year-old Xuan Thao Thi Tu of Hurlock were traveling northbound on Route 16, near Route 392, in a Toyota Tundra. Investigators believe that inclement weather caused the truck to slide off the road, into a ditch. Police say Trang and Tu both exited the vehicle at that time.

Shortly after, a Ford Escape pulled over on the scene. Moments later, a Hyundai Elantra hit the back of the Ford. The Ford slid into a ditch on the southbound side of Route 16. The Hyundai slid off the northbound side of the road, hitting Trang and Tu, before landing in the same ditch their vehicle was in.

When troopers arrived, they found the three vehicles damaged, and Trang and Tu lying in the ditch with injuries. The occupants of the Ford and Hyundai were not hurt. However, Trang was taken to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Tu, Trang’s wife, was taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital. She is being treated for injuries.

No charges have been filed. Police say after the investigation is complete, the Dorchester County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the case.
