Pocomoke captures 20th state title in program history
Jackson-Bowen scores game-winner with less than 2 minutes left
CHESTERTOWN, Md- The Pocomoke field hockey team capped off a dream 2021 season, defeating Patuxent 1-0 in the 1A state championship game on Saturday.
The Warriors thought they had a lead early in the first quarter, but a Leni Wittman goal was wiped out by penalty.
After a few more near misses on corners, both teams would roll into the halftime break locked in a scoreless tie.
Patuxent would gain momentum in the third quarter, nearly converting several corners. Pocomoke keeper Ella Esham would make some key saves to give her team a chance late.
With no score for the first 58+ minutes, the Warriors would break thru with less than two minutes remaining. Marli McDorman’s backhand shot would be turned away, but Aubrey Jackson-Bowen would gather and deposit the shot for score.
The final 100+ seconds would roll off the clock quickly, as the Warriors’ celebration began.
The victory seals the 20th state championship for Pocomoke, second all-time in state history.
