Ravens hold strong in final inning, soar past Milford to stay atop the Henlopen standings

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Behind two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sussex Tech Ravens defeated the Milford Bucs 4-3 to move to 11-1 on the year. The loss drops the Buccaneers to 9-3.

Coming off their first loss of the season on Saturday to St. Georges, Sussex Tech welcomed in Milford (9-2). The Bucs came into the afternoon quietly having a great season, sitting sixth in the state standings.

Milford came out hot. Two quick hits in the top of the first inning including an RBI double by Aydin Zimmerman to bring Matt Winkleblech home from second. In the bottom of the inning, pitcher Alex Mergner struck out two of three batters to keep the score 1-0 to end the first.

The score stayed the same headed to the 4th inning, where the Tech bats came alive. Jaryn Sample, Malikye Wells and Dylan Merritt each with a single to load the bases and a pass ball to bring Sample home from third to tie the game at one. Another walked batter brought a runner home to give the Ravens the 2-1 lead to end the inning. Jump ahead to the sixth and Tech plated some insurance runs. With a man on first, Alex Adams sent a shot into deep right field to bring Grant Allen home from third. Next batter up, Connor Ellingsworth slapped a shot up the middle to bring Adams home from third to extend the lead to 4-1 headed to the 7th. Needing three runs to force extras, the Bucs put two runs on the board in the top of the inning but couldn’t complete the comeback as Tech held on for the 4-3 win.

It was a big day on the mound for Tech ace Cody Dimes  Nine strikeouts in a complete game for the Senior. Alex Adams (1) and Grant Allen (2) combined for 3 RBI’s on the afternoon for Tech.

The Ravens return to action this Thursday when they host Indian River (7-5) at 4:15. The Bucs will look to get back in the win column when they host Sussex Central (8-3) on Thursday.
