Central girls down Smyrna, Eagles boys top the Knights in double header

GEORGETOWN, Del.- In a double header between Sussex Central and Smyrna, the Central girls took down the Eagles 41-36 and the Smyrna boys defeated the Knights 59-36.


Sussex Central came into this one as the third ranked team in the Henlopen North with a 3-2 record while the Eagles were trying to get back to .500 on the season sitting at 2-3.

The Knights came out firing, taking an early 8 point lead midway through the first quarter and eventually a 3 point, 12-9 lead headed into the second. In the second, the Eagles came alive from behind the arc. Three 3’s in the second, including two straight from Megan Keller gave Smyrna a 26-23 lead at half. The Eagles held that lead headed into the fourth quarter leading 36-34 after Keller hit a buzzer beating lay up to break a 34 point tie.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights picked up some momentum on defense. Behind three quick steals from Victoria Jacobs, Central shut out the Eagles in the final quarter to take it 41-36. The Golden Knights return to the court Tuesday at 7 when they travel to Camden to take on Caesar Rodney. The Eagles look to get back on track and into the win column when they host Dover next Tuesday at 7.

As the hottest teams in the entire state, Smyrna came into Georgetown with all the confidence in the world. Coming off of a huge win over Caesar Rodney on Tuesday, the Eagles touted the best record in DIAA. The Golden Knights on the other hand were riding a four game win streak scoring at least 52 points in each.

The Eagles struck fast to start, jumping out to a quick 6-0 run that was stopped by an Alton Dennis and one bucket to make it 6-2 midway through the quarter. The Golden Knights kept it within fifteen points until late in the second quarter as they cut the Smyrna lead to ten at half.

Central came out of the break firing on a quick 7-0 run to make it a slim three point deficit. After a Smyrna time out, the Eagles started to make a run. A thirteen point lead to end the third quarter quickly turned into twenty and eventually twenty three as Smyrna coasted past Central 59-36.

The Eagles continue their hot streak Tuesday when they host Dover at 7. Central looks to get back on track when they travel to Camden to take on Caesar Rodney next Tuesday.
