Milford claims first Henlopen boys soccer title since 1989

Buccaneers 3, Indians 1/Final

FREDERICA, De- For the second time this season, the Milford Buccaneers boys soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit to beat Indian River 3-1. The Bucs defeated IR on Nov. 14th under those circumstances, and did it again on Tuesday night to win the 2020 boys soccer Henlopen Championship.

IR jumped ahead in the conference title game with less than eight minutes in the half, when Jordan Illian’s long pass was run down by Willem Lambertson and put in for the first score of the game.

Milford would send the equalizer just four minutes later. Emanuelle Carranza found a deflection on a direct kick and put it into the back of the net, tying the game at one, before the teams went into the half.

In the second half, the Buccaneers opened up their lead. Sam Dominguez would capitalize on a mistake by an Indians defender, running down a long ball and placing it just over the keeper’s head to give his team the 2-1 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Aaron Sollie would close the door. Capitalizing on another IR mistake, Sollie intercepted a ball deep in the Indians zone and pushed a shot over the charging goalkeeper for the Bucs’ final score of the game.

The victory gives Milford their first Henlopen Conference championship since 1989.
