Bayhealth building new walk-in and emergency care facility in Milton

MILTON, Del. – People living near the Milton area will have access to a new Bayhealth facility in about two years.

On Monday, Bayhealth announced it will be building a new 30-thousand to 40-thousand square foot out-patient center in Sussex County. They bought the 18-acre property which is on the corner of the Route 9 and Hudson Road back in 2018. Officials say the center will include primary care physicians specialty physicians, laboratory and imaging services as well as a free standing emergency department. They believe this facility will help address the needs of that area’s growing population.

“If you were to take that spot on Route 9 and Hudson Road and draw a one mile or two mile circle around there, the existence of current physicians and services is pretty slim,” says Terry Murphy, the President and CEO of Bayhealth.

Officials believe this new center may help reduce the number of emergency room visits. All patients arriving for walk-in or emergency services at Bayhealth’s new location will receive a medical screening exam to determine their necessary level of care. Only patients who medically qualify as emergency patients will be charged an emergency department rate. Non-emergency cases will be charged as a walk-in clinic visit.

Officials expect the $35 million project to be completed in less than two years.
