SBY Riverside Circle complete and open for traffic

SALISBURY, Md. – The new traffic circle at the intersection of Riverside Drive, West Carroll and Mill Streets is finally fully open to drivers in Salisbury. “This intersection was given a very poor grade for intersections. The whole thought in upgrading this to a circle was that it would reduce the number of accidents and improve pedestrian safety,” said Acting Mayor Julia Glanz.

The acting mayor says that the only thing left for crews to do is install guardrails and paint crosswalks.

Acting Mayor Glanz tells 47ABC that the city wanted to revamp the intersection to reduce accidents and improve pedestrian safety. “At rush hour in the morning and the evening it gets pretty congested. That should reduce itself. That’s what the engineers are saying. We do ask for patience,” said Acting Mayor Glanz.

The acting mayor says that while some folks might be confused about how the circle works – the city will be working on ways to inform drivers about the rules of the roundabout. “We’ll put up some educational videos and memes on Facebook for folks. But really it’s yielding to folks that are already in the traffic circle. So just look left and you should be okay. Just be patient with one another,” said Acting Mayor Glanz.

Acting Mayor Glanz also tells 47ABC that congestion should ease up after the next few weeks. That’s when the state highway administration will be testing and adjusting the timing on nearby traffic lights. “By monitoring the traffic situation over the next couple of weeks we’ll be able to figure out what’s the best timing,” said Acting Mayor Glanz.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
