Controlled fire spreads in Hurlock, leaving elderly man with serious injuries
HURLOCK, Md. – An elderly man in Hurlock was airlifted to a burn center on Thursday after a burn pile on his property spread out of control.
At 6:00 p.m. on Oct. 22, crews with the Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company responded to a residence in the 4300 block of Osborne Road after a passerby reported a fire. A total of 20 firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze in 15 minutes.
The fire consumed a 40 foot by 20 foot grass area and damaged three vehicles. The total damage is estimated to be valued at $30,000.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal ruled the fire to be accidental. Investigators say the adult male was burning trash and brush when the fire unintentionally spread beyond his control, burning him.
