Local restaurant teams up with organization to feed families affected by COVID-19

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – The longer the coronavirus pandemic continues, the longer families go without jobs, income, and even food.

“I saw people on TV standing in line for these food banks, and it’s just heartbreaking,” said Perry.

And after having to cancel her reservation at the Summer Salts Beach Grill for her husband’s birthday party, Kathleen Perry decided to use that money to give back in more ways than one.

“I was trying to think of a way of how do I still give them the money that they could’ve gotten from the birthday party but yet help people,” said Perry.

With a lot of brainstorming and planning, Perry along with the owners of the Summer Salts Beach Grill, came up with the Summer Salts and Friends feed Sussex program. Partnering with The Edward Pyle State Service Center to feed local families affected by the coronavirus.

“There are a lot of centers right now that are closed, they’re not able to get food so this helps reach out to provide food for them,” said Owner of Summer Salts Beach Grill, April Fels.

So how exactly does the program work? All you have to do is simply make a monetary donation to the restaurant, and they, in turn, will make delicious meals to be given out for free to those who need it most.

“We’re going to give these families a menu from Summer Salts and give them the luxury of being able to pick whatever they want off of our menu because they don’t get that when they go to these centers they get what they’re given,” said Fels.

And while there’s no telling how long this pandemic will last, Fels and Perry say this is just a small way to help make people’s lives a little easier.

“This is just kind of maybe like a little treat we can give them to make their life a little bit better for just a while,” said Perry.

If you make a donation you’ll not only be helping families in need, but you’ll also be helping the Summer Salts Beach Grill to pay for things such as food costs and labor for their cooks. They’ll be providing these meals to families on Mondays and Wednesdays starting this Wednesday. If you’re interested in donating to the cause, the Summer Salts Beach and Grill is accepting donations over the phone. You can give them a call at 302- 581-0423. You can also stop by and drop off donations curbside. They’re accepting Cash, credit cards, or check. All donations are tax-deductible.
