After decades of helping local youth, gym to close its doors

FRUITLAND, Md. – A gym that has helped young people for decades in Fruitland is closing its doors for good.

The Y.E.S. Gym has helped countless Middle and High School students as well as many in the disabled community since it opened 26 years ago.

In an emotional Facebook post the owner, Fred Vanderveen, says it’s just not financially possible to keep the gym going.

“It brought a lot of very interesting characters together. And it taught them that everybody had worth. And the harder you work, the better you get. You might not always be on top, but you’ll be better than when you started,” Vanderveen said.

The Y.E.S. Gym will be closing its doors for good on October 1.

Vanderveen says he will have to decide what to do with the 26-years worth of equipment at his gym, but he says in the future he still wants to work with kids in some capacity.

In closing, Vanderveen said, “the friendships formed and the lessons learned will continue far past the wood and nails of a 1935 Shirt Factory.”
