Salisbury family displaced, house fire under investigation

SALISBURY, Md. – Investigators are still working to piece together exactly what ignited the flames that caused $100,000 worth of damage to a Salisbury home, early Monday morning.

“There were a lot of smoke and flames. My whole room was burning,” says Orlson Charles, a young victim of the house fire.

There’s not much left of the home on 617 Truitt Street. “I was in bed and my dad was banging on the door telling me to get out because there was a fire,” says Charles.

The family tells 47 ABC that the fire destroyed everything. “We’re doing fine but we lost everything,” says Bernadette Valcin, the homeowner.

What officials do know is that the blaze started in the front bedroom. But they tell 47 ABC, the exact cause still remains a mystery that the State Fire Marshall spent the morning trying to solve. They even brought out dogs to investigate but it’s not clear what the dogs were searching for.

While there isn’t an explanation right now, the family tells 47 ABC they are looking on the bright side. “But I thank God everything is fine. We don’t have anyone hurt. Everybody is okay. It was four people in the house. Everybody came out safely. I thank God for that,” says Valcin.

The family also credits the smoke detectors in their home for waking them up in time. The Red Cross is helping the four victims.
