Zay slaps walk-off triple to power Smyrna softball into state championship

SMYRNA, Del.- Smyrna’s Laiken Zay slapped a walk-off, RBI triple to plate Zoe Wilcox and punch the Eagles’ ticket into the DIAA State Championship with a 2-1 win over Delaware Military Academy.

DMA got off to a hot start in the top of the 1st on a Nikki Elliott sac fly that scored Samantha Freeland. Their 1-0 lead would hold until the bottom of the third, when Smyrna would pull a double steal where Laiken Zay would steal home and tie it up at 1-1.

Payton Dixon and Graceyn Frost would put on a show in the circle, striking out six and seven batters, respectively.

In the bottom of the 7th, with two outs, Zoe Wilcox would get on base with an infield single. In the next slot, Zay would end the game, smashing a triple to the fence, deep enough to plate Wilcox from first.

Next up, Smyrna will look to make it back-to-back DIAA Softball titles on Saturday, May 25th against Caravel at the Pyle Center in Frankford, Del. First pitch is tentatively set for 1:00pm.
