WiHi falls to Patterson in 2A boys basketball state final
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- A day after defeating Oakdale in the state semifinals, the WiHi Indians fell to Patterson in the state final game 79-56. The Tribe finished the season with a 24-4 record and a state finals appearance.
The Indians came into this one looking for their first state title since 2002. It was a close game to end the first quarter with WiHi only down one point to the Clippers. The next eight minutes would spell trouble for the Tribe as Patterson star senior Marvin Price would come alive. Price would end the first half with 21 points, going on a 10-0 run himself in a 3 minute span. The Clippers would take the 12 point lead into the break 38-26.
Second half would be much like the end of the first. Empty possessions by the Indians and bucket after bucket for the Clippers led to Patterson carrying a 13 point lead into the final quarter of the game. The final eight minutes would see the Clippers pull away and defeat the Indians 79-56.
WiHi cycled through three different defenses in this one (2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone and man-2-to-man) as the Clippers were able to figure them out overtime. This state title loss drops head coach Butch Waller to 1-5 in state final games.
