The Brightside: Brewing for charity at Black Narrows
Black Narrows brew house is a newer addition to Chincoteague, but it’s already making a name for itself.
All because of the big hearts of the owners.
The craft-brewing business is the brain child of Jenna Chapman and her husband Josh.
“We always wanted to be a third place where people could come and gather. We wanted to be a family place. We wanted to make really good beer.”
The pair also dreamt of donating 10 percent of their beer sales to charity.
However, that kind of business plan isn’t very attractive to potential lenders.
“We wanted to be able to give right off the bat and commit to it before we even start selling our beer 10 percent of our gross beer sales. When we were looking at trying to find a loan banks turned us down because of the 10 percent. They said ‘No. I don’t want to see that money go out the door right away.”
Eventually, they got the funding they were looking for and are already getting behind several causes including a little girl named Brianna who is fighting cancer for the second time.
They recently held a fundraiser for her to help the family out with her expenses.
And it was a big success thanks to their quality products.
“We make all of our beers here at the Brewery and we try to have a little bit of something for everyone.”
They are hoping the example they are setting will motivate other people to pay it forward as well.
“Our mission is to empower people to effect change in their local and global communities.”
