Light of Literacy Awards hosts 5th annual event to highlight literary efforts

The 5th annual Light of Literacy Awards took place April 20, 2017 at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center.

This special occasion highlights some of the literary efforts occurring in our community.

Organizers say many volunteers take their time to educate literacy in all forms.

In January, community members nominate candidates, as the committee reviews it and from there, select a winner.

There were six awards handed out, ranging from higher education to business.

The chair of Friends of Wicomico Public Libraries, Susan Bounds tells 47 ABC that it was amazing to have a packed room with supporters, as well as legislators.

"Many of those delegates and legislators did come and it was absolutely phenomenal to have that kind of support in the room and that kind of support recognizing efforts in our community," Bounds says.

Organizers hope to continue this award ceremony for years to come, in order to recognize individuals who are giving back to our community.
