UPDATE: Cause of death released for DE fugitive found in VA

The manner of death of Lincoln man who was wanted in Georgetown on rape charges, and was involved in a barricade situation in Newport News, Virginia on Wednesday, has been released.

The Georgetown Police Department say on Wednesday when members of the Newport News Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the United States Marshals Service tried to arrested 30-year-old Jawan Colson, he barricaded himself inside of a room at the Midtown Motel on Jefferson Avenue in the Virginia town.

According to the report, after several failed attempts by the Tactical Operations Unit tried to convince Colson to surrender, they sent CS gas into the room, and made their way in. Once inside, Officers reportedly found Colson unconscious.

He was then apparently rushed a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His body was turned over to the custody of the medical examiner’s office, in Norfolk. On Thursday, the medical examiner’s office reportedly ruled that the cause and manner of death as suicide by hanging.

Colson was wanted in Georgetown on three counts of rape, along with strangulation, unlawful sexual contact, unlawful imprisonment, theft of a motor vehicle, and theft under $1500. The charges stem from a December 19th incident, where Police say Colson bound and gagged a 29-year-old woman, sexually assaulted her, and fled the scene in the woman’s SUV. The SUV was later recovered in Dover.
