Delaware State Police phone scam tips

Delaware State Police now say they are going to provide the public with a Scam Alert Advisory. The advisory will be a general alert that can be read at any part of Delaware.
The goal of the advisory is to alert people to be on the lookout for scammers who make phone calls requesting monetary donations to benefit police, EMS, etc. Police say there have been complaints made recently concerning a request for donations to benefit police officers, withholding any formal name of an organization.
Troopers offer the following steps to avoid becoming a victim of phone scams:
· Try to get the mystery caller’s phone number and address.
· Make sure of all the facts they are claiming. Police say if you get a call and are concerned that it may be a scammer, ask the caller where they are calling from and contact the agency to verify their employment before giving up any money.
· Google or internet search the company and make sure it’s a valid website.
· If you believe it is a scam… Hang up.
Troopers say these scams are difficult to investigate. Scammers will target persons of all age groups without discrepancy. Delaware State Police are asking citizens to remember the tips offered to avoid being scammed.
