Realtors praise Wicomico County’s moratorium on public school impact fee

Families looking to build a home in Wicomico County will save more than $5,000 over the next few months, according to local realtors’.

This week, council approved a six-month moratorium on the Public School Impact Fee for single and multi-family construction.

Local realtors say council passed a similar measure last year for four months, and more than seventy building permits were filed. They normally see that number over the course of a year.

However, they say the benefit is not just for people who want to build a new home.

“A lot of jobs depend on construction jobs,” says Brandon Brittingham, a real estate agent with the Long and Foster Real Estate Maryland group. “You’re going to have money being spent on these houses, affordable housing for local homeowners, and you are going to have people in the economy seeing new places being built. I think it’s just a snowball effect of success.”

Council members are reportedly taking the six months to also come up with an alternative solution to the impact fee if they do see the success that realtors’ are anticipating.
