Sussex Technical High School school board could see changes

A new bill introduced in the Delaware House hopes to change the way school board members are chosen for Sussex Technical High School.

Currently, all seven members are appointed by the Governor , but the new legislation would require them to be elected. One board member would be elected from each of Sussex County’s seven public school districts. Three of the board members would initially serve only a two-year term to stagger re-election cycles. It would also reduce their term to four years, as opposed to seven.

Advocates for the changes cite the fact that county public schools currently elect their board members and that the vocational school should do the same.

This proposal comes on the heels of a recent agreement to temporarily raise county property taxes so the school can restructure their finances.
