Dorchester County Public Schools receives grants

In just about two years, Cambridge- South Dorchester High School will be seeing some major upgrades at no cost to tax payers.
The Federal Government’s Qualified Zone Academy Bond awarded a grant to the partnership of Dorchester County Public Schools, the Ironman Foundation and the CSDHS athletic boosters.
This funding will help renovate and build both physical education and competition athletic facilities at the high school.
This includes a competition softball/multipurpose field with fencing and accessories, athletic lighting, renovations to the press box at Viking Stadium, a batting cage, new basketball goals and winch system, and a new gym floor.
Dr. Henry Wagner, the superintendent of Dorchester County, “When students have up to date facilities, whether they’re in the athletic realm or in any other realm, it’s going to enhance the ability for them to reach their potential. That’s what we’re looking forward to in regard to these particular opportunities.”
This grant, approved at $625,000 is given to schools that have more than thirty-five percent of their students participating in the free and reduced meals program.
The grant also requires a ten percent in- kind contribution from private sector entities. We’re told this is being met through donations from the Iron Man Foundation and the value of volunteer time provided by the C-SD Sports Boosters.
We’re told there’s $114,000 of real or in-kind contributions between these two groups.
