Salisbury Elks Lodge celebrates Flag Day

Sunday was Flag Day in U.S. The country celebrated the 238th birthday of “Old Glory.”

The Salisbury Elks and Boy Scout Troop 817 celebrated Sunday afternoon by recounting the flag’s history. They also held a flag retirement ceremony; the tradition of properly disposing of well-used flags by folding them and ceremoniously burning them.

Paul Baker, the president of the Salisbury Elks Lodge says, “We’re properly treating our flag and properly showing it the respect it deserves, and incorporating the younger people like the Boy Scout 817. What we’re doing is hopefully teaching them the importance of not only the emblem of the flag, but what it stands for, and the freedom that it’s brought.”

If you have an American flag that’s ready to be retired, folks at the Salisbury Elks tell 47 ABC anyone can drop them off anytime. They’ll take care of their proper disposal.
