Del. sees spike in overdoses over holiday weekend

The holiday season is in full swing, and it's a joyous time for many, but it's also a time of great concern for Delaware health officials.
Over the long holiday weekend, from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 people died from suspected overdoses in the first state. Of the 11 people who died 8 were in New Castle, and 3 were in Kent County and Sussex County.
Health officials are concerned about the impact the holidays might have to those who are suffering from addiction. The Director for the Delaware Division of Public Health tells us the holidays can be stressful for many, and stress can trigger a relapse for those struggling with the disorder.
"Some triggers may be is that people are sad during the holidays, but financial hardships are a big cause for stress, and could be a big trigger for relapse," says Dr. Karyl Rattay, the Director for the Delaware Division of Public Health
As a response to those suspected overdoses, the health department will be hosting a series of community sessions as a way for residents to talk with treatment experts and learn about local resources.
All community session are from 2-7PM.
