Sept. 4 – BrainStrong 5k

The fourth annual BrainStrong 5k for Labor Day 2015 is almost here!
The funds raised from this race go to continuing goals of educating, preventing, and raising awareness about concussions in youth sports. In the last three years, the BrainStrong 5K has given out almost $20,000. With the funds from last year, we are making concussion awareness and prevention more attainable throughout the state!
There has been a wide range of recipients: including youth sports teams, YMCA of Dover, the Mid Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, and researchers at the University of Delaware. Our grant recipients are using the funds to provide coaching education on concussion prevention, research on the impact of “heading the ball” in youth soccer, and providing needed equipment such as helmets to help prevent concussions in our young athletes. We strive to keep our young athletes BrainStrong!
The amount of organizations requesting funding through the BrainStrong Grants
increased 100% in the last year, and sadly, we were not able to provide funding to all who applied. With your help, we could continue to expand our reach in educating and preventing concussions, and, as BrainStrong increases its size and range of impact, we would like to provide you with the opportunity to support our event.
There were almost 400 racers at BrainStrong 2014, double from the number in 2012!
In the upcoming 2015 race, we will continue to make the event a fun, family friendly day! This year the race will have entertainment, goodies, free Italian Ice, and a concussion education table. We have had many participants come from local high schools, TBI survivors with their families, and different athletic groups race for the BrainStrong 5K. Team running was popular this year, and many people raced for a loved one who was affected by a TBI. We hope to continue these traditions in years to come. From young to old, everyone came out to enjoy the event, and all
finished strong for BrainStrong. We look forward to another great race this Labor Day!
Sponsoring the 2015 BrainStrong 5K, in addition to helping raise awareness about
concussions, will also help provide scholarships to Camp Cranium, a camp for young TBI survivors. Your funding will help enable BIAD to be the best it can be for Delaware. Race registration is available at trisportsevents.com and information about BIAD is located at biaofde.org. We encourage teams to come out together to run or walk! The course is accessible to all, and we hope to see people out running, walking, and rolling. A concussion is considered a mild traumatic brain injury. Traumatic Brain Injuries can happen to anyone at any time; our goal through the BrainStrong 5K is to try to reduce such preventable concussions. We are looking forward to your help, through sponsorship or participation.
