Lewes man charged with DUI after crashing into moped
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – A 46-year-old Lewes man is facing multiple charges after hitting a moped with his car. Police say around 7:37 p.m. Friday Matthew Gleason was driving his Honda Element southbound on Bayside Outlet Drive. That’s when police say Gleason approached the intersection of Shuttle Road.. At the same time, a Yamaha YW5 driven by a 35-year-old Lewes man was traveling westbound on Shuttle Road in a group of about seven mopeds.
Police say Gleason did not stay stopped at the sign, and drove into the intersection in front of the group of mopeds. As a result, police say Gleason hit the moped with the passenger side of his Honda. The moped then rolled onto its side and came to a stop in the middle of the intersection, with the driver still seated on it. Police say the other mopeds were able to avoid the crash, but the one who was hit was not wearing a helmet.
The moped driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Christiana Hospital, and remains in critical condition. Gleason was not hurt in the crash. Investigators say Gleason was driving under the influence of alcohol, and had two prior DUI convictions Gleason was arrested and charged with 1st degree vehicular assault, and a 3rd DUI offense, which are felonies. Gleason was also charged with failure to stop at a stop sign.
Gleason was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court #3 and taken to Sussex Correctional Institution on $5,050 cash bond,
