Del. State Police announce new community initiative

DOVER, Del. –  Delaware State Police have announced a new community initiative despite obstacles faced during these challenging times.

We’re told at 6 p.m. Thursday, the DSP Community Outreach Unit launched the first Kent County Civilian Advisory Board. Although the meeting could not meet in person, officials say the Zoom meeting was the first step in creating partnerships and collaborations with community members and Delaware State Police.

“The purpose of the Civilian Advisory Board is a continued commitment to ongoing and proactive communication with our citizens, businesses, and community-based organizations,” said Kent County Community Outreach Officer Master Corporal Alfonso Jones in a statement.

The board is focusing on four topics: identifying policing needs within the community, providing input on current or future Delaware State Police community educational programs, strengthen DSP public safety practices and partnerships, and providing guidance on non-enforcement strategies to gain greater trust within the community.

The board members are comprised of volunteers of various backgrounds, including community members, clergy, educators, youth advocates, and community outreach specialists. We’re told the board will work alongside department members to review initiatives and look into ways to improve community engagement programs.
