St. Mary’s Tops SU In Cavanagh’s Homecoming

The SU men’s basketball team fell behind by nearly 20 points in the first half before coming up just short on their comeback against St. Mary’s, 70-67. The loss drops the Sea Gulls to 8-3 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.

The Seahawks came out red hot to start the game from the field, and would quickly build a double digit lead. Delaszo Smith would get to the rim for several easy buckets as he would finish with a game high 23 points. Queen Anne’s grad Brendan Cavanagh would then check in and give the Seahawks an immediately lift off the bench, connecting on a triple from the left wing. SU would settle down though, and find their rhythm. Easton grad Gordon Jeter would hit a jumped from the left wing to cut St. Mary’s lead to just 11 at the break. The Sea Gulls continued to push in the second half, as Justin Witmer would connect on a couple shots. SU continued to cut at the deficit and eventually was able to get it down to just 3. Salisbury University would have the ball late with a chance to tie, but Witmer’s 3 pointer was off the mark to end the game.

SU returns to work Wednesday when they host York.
