After a near death experience, victim speaks out

what authorities described as a viscous attack. a man attacking him with a machete – while trying to rob him now recovered – the owner speaks out about that horrific experience. a word of caution — some images may be considered graphic. 47 abc’s julian sadur reports. he wanted to rob me and kill me and that’s exactly what he said track the scars on stephen byrd’s body are all that’s left as a reminder of byrd’s near death experience – that and the memories he’s left to live with everyday. every time you ride down here it goes through your mindi mean you have to think about it and you look make sure ain’t nobody hiding around or hiding behind the building or whatever you know track back in may – court documents say byrd was attacked by gregory sterling senior with machete – resulting in a partially severed left arm – large lacerations to his chest – and lacerations to several of his internal organs – including his lungs. byrd alleges he had given sterling – who he claims was homeless – a part time job and a place to rest his head. that’s why he says he never thought sterling – would be one to rob him. it was right here where byrd alleges sterling approached, hand covered up stabbed him twice with a machete and then looked at him and said i’m going to rob you and kill you. it was after that that byrd dropped his wallet and then went into defense mode, eventually ending up over here where a trailer used to be, hiding underneath the trailer with sterling still trying to attack him i jumped under the trailer hoping that you know maybe i could grab him, pull him under the trailer or something you know, cause he hit me in the lung and when you get hit in the lung you don’t last a whole long time track byrd – a veteran – told me as he was lying there – he wasn’t sure he was going to live. it was then that by luck his friend kurt cook drove up – saw what was going ong and called police. he hadn’t come around i’d been dead, simple as that “he saved your life” he saved my life, kurt yeah he saved my life track byrd has since reopened his store – at part time hours now until he’s fully healed. meanwhile sterling is set to stand trial in october – he’s charged with attempted 1st degree murder – among other charges. julian sadur 47 abc byrd tells 47 abc that although he was born here on the eastern shore and lived here most his life – because of the attacks in may – he’d like nothing more than to sell everything he owns and move. eastern shore residents looking for legal help for
