Delaware man building ‘safe haven’ for military combat veterans

Vet Homes

GEORGETOWN, Del. – With a vision and a little bit of faith, David Forman is one step closer to turning a former home into a safe haven for military combat veterans.

“I was available when God called and I just followed the path. I think it’s so important that they have a place where they can feel that brotherhood. That they are in a safe place,” said Forman.

Forman, who’s the president of Christian Grace LLC, tells 47 ABC he recently bought the Georgetown property from an auction with the intention of making some major renovations in order to turn it into a home where up to seven veterans can escape to for a moment of peace, or live permanently.

“It can be used permanently, month by month, or it can be used as a retreat to get away from wherever they’re coming from.”

Forman says after noticing so many veterans struggling with homelessness, depression, substance abuse, and more, he felt they weren’t getting the help they so desperately needed.

“Veterans that see combat come back to a world of people that don’t have the same experience.I feel safe at home because of what they’ve done so I’d like to give back to that, to those people.”

But now he’s finding himself facing some financial challenges. Adding that the cost of building two new bathrooms, renovating the kitchen, and making the house handicap accessible, is a little more expensive than he thought.

“When I got to the halfway point I was out of money and I’m definitely far from finished. We’re about $90,000 short.

Which is why he’s now asking for the community to help in any way they can in order to give back to those who fought four our country

“I don’t think there’s anybody more deserving than this class people because they did what I couldn’t, they went out and kept my family safe.”
