Cancellation of Sea Witch Festival could impact Rehoboth Beach businesses

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – As we learned earlier this week – Rehoboth Beach’s Sea Witch Festival is cancelled this year. Mayor-Elect Stan Mills tells 47ABC that the festival typically brings in tens of thousands of people and a boost for local businesses. “Hopefully everybody understands that it’s just not possible to properly social distance and protect everybody’s safety. Health and welfare of citizens is the number one priority,” said Mayor-Elect Mills.

Mayor-Elect Mills says that cancelling events in Rehoboth Beach has been the best way to keep people safe. But it has dealt a blow to the local economy. He adds that the cancellation will also impact the number of people coming from outside of town for the festival. “That’s a big disappointment. That activity is actually the biggest activity that we have in the city of Rehoboth Beach. Bigger than even the July 4th festivities. It’s no doubt going to disappoint tens of thousands of people that normally populate the town,” said Mayor-Elect Mills.

Mayor-Elect Mills says although many events have been cancelled – the city has been meeting almost weekly to figure out what can be done to help local businesses. He says that the city is also trying to send out positive messaging to encourage visitors to come to town.
